Hello! Earlier this Autumn I set my first Illustration Prompt and I am delighted to have received two beautiful pieces to share with you today. I asked both artists to send some words to accompany their pieces - I hope you enjoy!
First of all this beautiful piece by Robyn Hepburn - she has a Substack newsletter which you can subscribe to here.
Robyn said: It was great to work in this structured but free way with the 3-step guidance. I loved being allowed lots of time to 'gather' before I had to start 'filtering.'
In the 'make' stage I played with materials to create textures and movement, then I finished it off digitally. I wanted to physically cut the text from paper and stick it in, but I realised too late. I'll have to try that another day.
I love how Robyn has flowed the images and words together, and there is a beautiful movement to the whole piece. It feels wonderfully dream-like. Thank you Robyn!
Next this gorgeous piece by Jess Stockham - you can follow her here.
Jess said: I really got inspired by Robert Louis Stevensons’ poem and had quite a few ideas for illustrations.
The idea of a child drifting off to sleep over the sea, journeying through the dark and arriving safely in the morning really appealed, so that’s what I concentrated on in the ‘Filter’ section of ‘Gather, Filter, Make’. I wanted a composition that delivered that sense but also included elements from the text. I added the lighthouse as an extra when I discovered R. L. Stevensons’ father and grandfather were both lighthouse engineers as it seemed to add to the feeling of ‘safeness’.
The 3 steps to the process really helped me focus on composition and I think it stopped me from me rushing onto finished artwork too early and maybe losing heart.
I love how Jess directs your gaze across the page with artwork and words. There’s a real story flow across the spread with Jess’ composition and the use of colour and black and white is cleverly handled. Thank you Jess!
I hope you enjoyed my first ever prompt exhibition. Keep your eyes peeled for m next prompt, and a chance to be featured in another exhibition!
Ella xx
Thanks for sharing! Both are so good.
