Picture Book Club is for subscribers only. You can join for £4.50 per month - that’s like a fancy coffee these days, and as well as Picture Book Club, you get access to my back catalogue of paid posts, regular updates and behind-the-scenes videos from my studio. You also get exclusive access to my monthly lives: Art Play Dates and Picture Book Club. Plus, access to my private community, chats and loads more. You also help support me in making not only this content on Substack, but you help support my work as an illustrator.
If you are already a paid subscriber - thanks SO MUCH - your support means so much! If it’s beyond your budget at the moment, no worries, you still get access to my free posts and updates, which will pop up here on the regular...
I have just hit the fairly significant milestone of 2000+ free subscribers! Thank you to everyone who has subscribed. For those of you who choose to continue as free subscribers, thank you! I try and post regular content for my free subscribers. I have collated all my free posts on my home page, and you can see them all in my free posts section here. To celebrate this milestone, and to grudgingly acknowledge that it is also Black Friday week (I have nothing against Black Friday, as such, it just all feels a bit overwhelming, doesn’t it?!). I am offering 20% off paid subscriptions until Monday 2nd December. Which I believe is also now known as Cyber Monday (I always picture Cybermen when I see it called that!). That means you can subscribe for £3.60 £4.50 per month, or £36 £45 per year.
Ok, so on with all the details for Picture Book Club this month!
Hello!
I’m excited to be sending all the details for Picture Book Club this month, which is running tomorrow, Tuesday 26th November on Zoom from 8-9pm GMT.
The selection this month is Angry Arthur, written by Hiawyn Oram and illustrated by Satoshi Kitamura.
I will do a read-along at the beginning of the meet-up, but if you want to buy the book, may I recommend you get it through these sources:
• Shelf Editions run by the brilliant
• Storytellers Inc. run by the fabulous
Here are some prompts for you to think about in advance of meeting up, and the Zoom link is below for paid subscribers.
Question prompts:
How effective is the use of page turns in the book?
Look at the balance of page/double page spreads. How does the book use this to enhance the storytelling?
How about the use of panels and vignettes?
How does pace work in this book? How does Arthur’s anger build in the book, and how is this shown through words, pictures and composition?
